Chapter 19: The Physician
The cathedral almshouse stood in the shadow of the spire, behind a low wall and a gate that squeaked.
Rina crouched behind the wall in a borrowed grey cloak with the hood over her bob.
The cold of the frozen cobbles came up through her boots.
Elisenne crouched beside her.
On her other side, in a plain brown coat that did not fit him at all, was the Crown Prince of Aurelan.
"You came," Rina whispered.
"The Saint told me where to stand," said Lysander. "She did not say it was behind a wall."
"It's the best wall in the city."
"It smells of cabbage."
"Hush," said Elisenne.
The gate squeaked.
A thin man in a lay-brother's brown robe came out into the grey dawn with a basket on his arm and his hood pulled low.
He walked with a stoop.
He glanced left and right.
Rina stood up.
She stepped out from behind the wall and into the middle of the lane, and she threw back her hood.
The basket hit the cobbles.
Loaves rolled.
"My lady," the physician whispered.
He had gone the color of tallow, and his eyes bulged.
"You're alive," Rina said. "I'm sorry to disappoint you."
He turned to run.
Lysander stepped out of the shadow of the wall, tall and square and grim, and put a hand on the man's shoulder.
