Chapter 4: The Cameras

"I'll tell them to leave," Anson said, already reaching for the door.

"No."

He stopped.

"Three million people watched a video that cuts out the part where I put the knife down," I said. "I'm going to finish it for them."

He looked at my face for a second.

Then he took his hand off the door.

"Your call," he said.

Dot pulled off her green coat and put it around my shoulders.

"It's cold out there, and it's a good color on camera," she said. "Go."

The van's floodlight turned the drive white.

A reporter in a trench coat hurried toward me with a microphone, and a cameraman walked backward ahead of her.

"Josephine Alder? Why did you attack your sister at her wedding?"

I stopped on the gravel and looked straight into the lens.

"I didn't."

"There's video."

"There's part of a video," I said. "In the whole video, I put the knife on the table. My sister picked it up and cut her own hand. Two hundred people were filming. Ask any of them."

"Your mother says you have a history."

"My mother says a lot of things."

I pushed the sleeve of Dot's coat back and held my left arm up to the light.

The two pale lines ran across my wrist.

"This is my history," I said.

"Three years ago I woke up in an ambulance with this. I didn't do it to myself. I've been saying that for three years to people who didn't want to hear it."

"I'm saying it to you."

The reporter's mouth opened and closed.

"Are you telling me someone else did that to you?"

"I'm telling you I'd like to find out who."

Behind the camera, gravel crunched under heavy tires.

A black pickup came up the drive too fast and stopped crooked, with its door already open.
