Chapter 8: The Prescott Table

Anson's POV

My father eats lunch at the Prescott Lake Club every Tuesday, at the round table by the window, with the same six men.

I had not sat at that table in three years.

I told Jo where I was going before I left the house, because it was her rule that nobody decides things for her.

She looked at me over her coffee for a long moment.

"Go," she said. "Make him say it out loud."

So I walked into the dining room at noon, in the same navy suit I had been wearing since Saturday, and every head turned.

The members had all seen the video.

My father didn't look up from his soup.

"You're early for Friday," he said.

"I want to know who the buyer was."

"Sit down, Anson."

"The man you sent me to meet at the airport. The one whose flight never landed." I stayed standing. "Three years ago, the night of the rehearsal dinner. I'd like his name."

The six men stopped chewing.

Davis was at the end of the table with a purple bruise across his cheek, and he laughed.

"Here comes the madwoman's dog," he said. "Sit."

I did not look at him.

I was looking at my father's hands.

They were very steady, and they kept right on buttering a roll.

"And I'd like to know what four hundred thousand dollars paid to Helena Alder bought," I said. "Three days after."

Somebody at the next table put down a fork.

My father wiped his mouth with his napkin and finally lifted his eyes to mine.

They were pale and cold and unbothered.

"I paid for the marriage of my son," he said.

"To which of them?"

"The Alder girl was meant to be a Prescott wife," he said, quite clearly, so the whole room could hear. "Which Alder girl was a detail, and a detail the mother and I settled between us. The elder one made a spectacle of herself. The younger one was willing."
