Chapter 7: Rowan at the Gate

"Why is he out of bed?" Aldric said.

His voice was very even. I had not known he could do that.

"He woke up crying for you," Delphine said. "I couldn't leave him in the house with the guards gone. Then your Beta told me you'd gone to the river alone."

"My Beta told you."

"I was worried, darling. After what that Greywater Alpha has been saying."

She said it so sweetly that two of the riders nodded.

Torin laughed, once, without any humor.

"I have not said a word about you tonight, Luna. I've been standing in a tree."

"Alpha Garrow." She inclined her head politely. "I forgive the hunters, and I forgive the insult. All I want is my family home."

She looked at me last.

"Morven, sweetheart. You look thin."

I did not answer her.

I was looking at the blanket on her saddle.

Rowan's head turned. His eyes found my face in the lantern light.

"Mori," he said, hoarse with sleep.

I stepped forward. Torin caught my sleeve, and I shook him off.

"Hi, my love," I said. I made my voice soft. "It's me."

He reached out one hand.

Delphine's arm tightened across his chest.

"Rowan," she said in his ear. "Remember what I told you."

His hand stopped in the air.

"Mama says you got sick," he whispered. "She says you can't be near me. You'll make me sick too."

Nothing in my body worked for a moment.

"That isn't true," I said. "I'm not sick. I never was."

"Mama said."

"Delphine," Aldric said. "Hand him to me."

"Of course." She did not move. "Do you want to take him in front of thirty wolves?"
