I sat on the edge of the tub and looked at the two lines until they stopped looking like lines.
"Lucia?" The bride knocked again. "Should I call somebody?"
"No," I said. "Hold the gold. I'm going out for an hour."
The bride looked at my face, then at the bathroom door, then at my face again.
She'd been married since November. She wasn't stupid.
She put both hands over her mouth.
"Not a word," I said. "Not to the baker. Especially not to the baker."
"I would never," she whispered, and went pink to the ears.
I walked the two streets to the brick house in the wet July heat with the test in my pocket, wrapped in a paper towel.
The house was quiet. Pasquale was at the shop with Dad, losing at cards on Pasquale's wife's stool.
Damiano was upstairs.
His drafting table was by the window, under the clamp lamp, covered in trace paper.
He was drawing a building for Morelli and Santangelo.
Four floors of apartments on the river, on the old yard, with a green sign over the gate.
He didn't hear me come in.
He had the pencil flat and his tongue between his teeth, and the side of his right hand was gray to the wrist.
