Chapter 60: Live Rounds
"No," Damiano said.
He shut the door behind him and stood against it.
"Whatever sidewalk you're on," he said, "I'll be on it."
"You won't. You'll be on Loomis Street in a hard hat, and it'll be me and the baker and a rolling pin."
He almost smiled. Then he didn't.
"I don't want anybody to unload it for me," I said. "I don't want anybody to load it for me either. I want to be the one who knows."
He looked at it on my palm for a long time.
"Not in this house," he said finally. "Not with her down the hall."
"Then where?"
"The yard. Tomorrow. After dark."
The new site office sat at the back of the yard where my father's trailer used to be.
One room, on a concrete pad, with a window onto the river.
Damiano had built it in the spring with the foreman, on weekends.
There was a long plan table under a bare bulb, with the Loomis Street drawings taped down at the corners.
A metal desk with a phone and a coffee maker. One rolling chair. A box fan in the open window, pushing the hot night around.
On the wall over the desk hung my father's old sign.
MORELLI CONSTRUCTION. SINCE 1999.
And under it, on two nails, a wooden cane.
I knew that cane.
Where it had snapped there was a steel sleeve, a hand's width long, fitted tight and pinned through.
"You kept it," I said.
"I took the halves off your floor the day you moved out of that apartment."
He didn't look at it.
"I sleeved it last winter. I didn't know who to give it to."
He set a small black magazine on the plan table.
Then a cardboard box of rounds, the kind you could buy at a sporting goods store.
"The man from the waiting room kept the magazine," he said. "In his glove box. Since June."
"Of course he did."
He laid Vito's pistol by them, on the stair drawings.
"Finger off the trigger," he said. "Always. Even when it's empty. Especially when it's empty."
"Why especially?"
