Nobody in the front dining room picked up a fork.
The old men outside had their faces almost against the glass.
Augusto stood at my left with his half espresso, waiting, the way he'd waited over his tomatoes.
I didn't stand up.
"Before I rule," I said, "hands. From all of you. For whoever speaks next."
Six hands went up down the long table.
Augusto's eyebrows went up over the white mustache. Then his hand went up too.
"Of course, Donna," he said. "Whoever it is."
I turned in my chair toward the window table.
"Give me one name," I said. "Who sent you up my father's stairs?"
The whole room turned with me.
The boy didn't reach for his forearm canes against the window frame.
He reached for the back of my father's chair.
Dad lifted the mended cane off it by the handle and held it out to him without a word.
The boy took it in his left hand.
