Damiano sat straight up in the bed and took the phone out of my hand with both of his.
"Again," he said into it. "Maddie. Say it again."
The spoon started banging on the tray.
"She won't," Pasquale said. "She said it once at six, looking at me. I think she meant me."
"She did not mean you, Nonno."
"Who feeds her? I feed her."
"Who's Papa?"
"Details. Come home. Bring the bread."
We were dressed in four minutes, and we didn't pay for breakfast, because we didn't stay for it.
She wouldn't say it again all day.
Not for Pasquale, who bribed her with a heel of bread. Not for my father, who said she'd meant "Pa" and he was a Pa.
At bedtime Damiano carried her up to the back room with the brass lock and stood at the window with her, the way he did every night.
