Chapter 14: Sunday Plates

Royce's POV

I brought nothing, because she had told me to.

It was the hardest thing I have ever carried up a set of porch steps.

The house was white frame with a green door, two blocks off Navigation Boulevard.

A fig tree stood bare in the side yard, and behind the house I could see the garage where Mari lived.

Concepcion Escobedo opened the door before I knocked.

She was short and sturdy, in an apron, with reading glasses hanging from a beaded chain on her chest.

She looked up at me for a long time.

"You're taller than the newspaper," she said.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Wipe your feet."

I wiped my feet.

Mari stood behind her mother in the hall with her arms crossed and her mouth held very tight.

She had not told me what her mother would do, because she did not know.

The front room had a shelf along one wall with a framed photograph on it, a candle, and a thermos with a dented lid.

I did not look at the man in the photograph.

I had looked at him for ten months, on a gate, on a card, on the inside of my eyelids.

"Sit," Concha said.

I sat at the end of a table set for three, and a plate was put in front of me before I had finished sitting.

It was chicken in dark mole, rice, and beans, and a stack of tortillas wrapped in a towel.
