Chapter 15: Ten Minutes

Stevie's POV

Warner was waiting at the kitchen door with his hands in his pockets and a face that hadn't slept.

"You came," he said.

"You asked."

"Not for me." He glanced at the cook stirring a pot and led me past her to the back stairs. "Don't talk until the east wing."

The house smelled of lemon polish, as it always had.

Caleb had wanted to sit in his truck at the end of the drive.

I had told him to sit on the other side of town, with his phone on the seat beside him.

He had agreed to the phone.

The nurse in blue scrubs was in a chair outside Gus's door with her clipboard.

She stood up when she saw me, and her braid swung.

"Mr. Warner. Mrs. Thayer left instructions."

"She changed them." Warner's voice was smooth and bored, his mother's own. "She wants your schedule sheet signed at the hospital board before noon, and she wants you to bring it. I'll sit with Grandfather."

"I should call her first."

"Call from the garden. The signal in this wing is terrible."

She looked at me, and then at him.

It was a long look.

Then she took her phone and her clipboard and went down the hall.

Warner shut the door behind her.

"Ten minutes," he said. "I mean it."

Gus sat by the east window in his wheelchair with a blanket over his knees and the morning light on his face.
