Chapter 7: The Bottle

The clinic called at seven in the morning.

The big guard read the results aloud in the hallway outside my door, and I wrote them on my hand with a pen.

The pills were vitamins. They were exactly what the label said.

The tin of tea was not.

It held dried leaf, finely chopped and mixed with chamomile, and somebody had ground a heart drug into the blend so evenly that no single cup would taste of anything.

"Every scoop is dosed," I said. "It isn't a cup or a pot. It's the supply."

The guard's face didn't move.

"Who buys it?"

"I don't know yet."

"Then find out," he said. "Quietly. I'll give you two men."

I took neither. I took only a notebook, and went down to the kitchen at the hour when it was empty.

The cook was already there, shelling peas into a bowl.

"Morning, signora," he said, without surprise.

"I'm only looking for the tea," I said. "The tin was nearly out."

"It comes on the first Monday. A box of six."

"Who orders it?"

"The signora Renata signs for it. Her husband found the supplier." He tipped a handful of peas into the pot. "A very good price, they say. Better than the old shop."

"Where does the box go when it's empty?"

He pointed with his chin.

At the back of the pantry, behind sacks of flour, there was a stack of flattened cardboard waiting for the trash.
