Chapter 16: Room Nine
Ramona's POV
The paramedic taped Boone's ribs on my porch steps and told him he needed a hospital.
"I need a motel," Boone said.
"Sir, you have a cracked rib on top of the three you already broke."
"Then tape the fourth one too."
I stood over them with my arms crossed, because I had promised my doctor I would sit down, and I was not going to sit down yet.
The sheriff's deputy had already put the three old-crew men in the back of his car.
The one with the broken wrist was still swearing at Faye through the window.
"Say that again," Faye told him, and he stopped.
Birdie's pickup came up the road then, slowly, and Tawny got out of the passenger side.
She had put her hair in a plain ponytail and washed her face.
She walked up the gravel past forty bikers, and every one of them watched her.
She stopped in front of the deputy with her hands at her sides.
"I'm Tawny Dobbs," she said. "I work at the Ridge Saints clubhouse. I want to give a statement about Rusty Cobb."
"Ma'am, this is a crime scene. You could do that at the station."
"I want to do it here."
She looked past him, at me.
"I want her to hear it. And I want them to hear it too."
The deputy looked at Boone, who nodded, and then at the bikers, who said nothing at all.
"All right," he said, and took out his notebook.
She told it in a flat voice, in plain order.
She said Rusty kept a second phone taped under the clubhouse bar.
She said every order he had given her was in it, with the dates.
She laid a small brass key on the deputy's notebook.
"It opens the cash drawer under the register," she said. "The phone's in there."
"He took the cash box from the safe on Friday night," she finished. "He told me ahead of time he would. He said we'd be in Mexico by Sunday."
