Chapter 24: The Key on the Hook
They put her on my chest in the recovery room, wrapped in a striped blanket, with a pink knit cap pulled to her eyebrows.
She had Boone's jaw.
She had it already, a day old, set hard against the world.
"Look at that," Boone said from the chair. "She's mad at everybody."
"She's three weeks early and she's hungry."
"Same thing."
I laughed, and it pulled at the stitches, and I stopped.
He had not left the room for twenty hours.
Faye had brought him a sandwich and a toothbrush, and he'd eaten the sandwich and ignored the toothbrush.
He sat with his elbows on his knees, watching the baby's chest go up and down.
"Ro."
"Yes."
"You said to ask when she got here."
"I did."
"Is it time?"
I looked at him over our daughter's head.
He had gray in his beard now, and a scar above his eyebrow, and the same eyes I had seen across a fence at eighteen.
Twenty-three years of waiting, and five months of him learning how to stand at a door.
"Not yet," I said.

"I need to give you something first."
"What?"
"Reach in the bag on the chair."
He found it in the side pocket of my overnight bag, and he turned it over in his palm.
It was a plain brass key.
It was the front door key to the house.
"I carried it for five months," I said. "Since the day I locked you out. I kept it in my jacket the whole time, and I kept thinking I'd throw it in the creek."
"You didn't."
"I'm not good at throwing things away. You know that."
He looked at me.
"It's yours," I said. "When you're ready to come home. Not to the workshop. Home. The house I built for you."
