Chapter 17: Ghost
Peg took the notice down off the wall.
She folded it in half, then in half again, and put it in her cardigan pocket.
"We're not looking at that tonight," she said. "Tonight we're looking at eleven thousand dollars."
"Grandma, it's six percent."
"It's six percent more than yesterday." She snapped a rubber band around a stack of fives. "Go home, sugar. Sleep. Both of you."
Beau drove me home.
Neither of us said much.
At the laundromat, he put the truck in park and sat with his hands on the wheel.
"That jump," he said.
"It was a single."
"I know what it was." He didn't look at me. "Go to bed, Brecken, before I say something in a pickup truck."
I went to bed.
I didn't sleep.
I lay on my back and did the math over and over.
One hundred and sixty-nine thousand dollars short.
The only thing I'd ever made that was worth that kind of money was sitting in a warehouse in New Jersey with Dane's face on the cover.
