Chapter 19: Deposition
The man in the windbreaker was halfway down the stairs before I found my voice.
"How did you know I'd be here?"
He didn't turn around.
"Lady," he said, "I've been parked across the street since four."
The door at the bottom banged shut.
I stood on the landing in Beau's sweatshirt with the envelope in both hands.
Beau came up behind me in his jeans, barefoot, and read over my shoulder.
Breach of confidentiality. Misuse of confidential materials. Interference with a publishing contract.
Damages of three million dollars.
A demand that I return every recording, transcript, note and draft I'd ever made while employed by Dane Hollings.
"Three million," I said. "I have eleven thousand dollars, and it's in a coffee can."
"It's not your coffee can. It's the kids'."
"That's worse, Beau."
He took the envelope out of my hands and set it on the counter.
Then he turned me around and held my face.
"Hey. Look at me. They waited outside your door all night so they could serve you the morning after. That's not a lawsuit. That's a message."
