Chapter 18: Rock Hall
The smoke alarm went off at eight in the morning.
Leandros Kallis stood in a cottage kitchen on the Chester River with a pan of black fish in one hand and a dish towel in the other.
"Don't say anything," he said.
"I wasn't going to."
"You're laughing."
"I'm not laughing," Linus said, from the doorway, wrapped in a blanket. "I'm breathing differently."
It was the first weekend of December.
The cottage was grey shingle on a small cove, with two rooms and a porch.
Leandros's father had bought it in 1994 and never once slept in it.
There was no staff.
There was no Manolis, who had taken Quincy to a Ravens game with a Greek flag and a thermos of ouzo.
He had been told not to call.
There was a stove and a fridge full of food Leandros had bought without a list.
There was a man who ran four terminals and could not turn a fish.
Linus took the pan, scraped it into the sink, and opened the window.
"What was that supposed to be?"
"Sea bass," Leandros said.
"It looks like a shoe."
"It was supposed to be breakfast."
"Nobody has fish for breakfast," Linus said.
"My grandfather did."
"Your grandfather was Greek and made of iron," Linus said. "Sit."
"I can help."
"You can sit."
Leandros sat on a kitchen stool with his arms crossed, in an old grey sweater and bare feet, and watched Linus crack eggs.
He was not a man who sat while others worked.
He was also, Linus noticed, looking at the back of his thighs.
