Chapter 15: The Wire

"She sent it to him before she even got in the car," Damian whispered.

He was back in the bed, gray in the face, with Kent counting his pulse.

"It's a video of a man standing," Beatrice said. "He can say you were helped."

"He can say I'm faking weakness to fool the board, or that Clara coached me," Damian said. "He has three weeks to find the version that works."

I was still shaking.

"He wants me at lunch Thursday," I said. "He wants me to sign that I lied about the blink test."

"Go," Damian said.

"Damian."

"Say yes. Let him think he's bought you."

I looked at his hand on the sheet.

"And if he wants more than a yes?"

"Then you get all of it on tape," Kent said. He was holding a tiny silver pin the size of a button. "A lawyer who has never taken a dollar from Wicklow Global will be in a car outside. Beatrice's driver."

I pinned it inside my collar.

Damian watched my hands.

"Come back," he said.

"That's the plan."

"No," he said, very low. "Come back."

At one o'clock on Thursday, Rhett was waiting in the corner of his club, in a booth with a white tablecloth and a view of Fifth Avenue.

Every table around us was full.

He stood when I came in, and held my chair, and for a moment he looked like a man meeting his cousin's kind wife.

"You came," he said.

"You said ten million."

"I did."

The waiter set down water and went away.

Rhett slid his phone across the cloth, face up.

It was Delaney's video, Damian in the window with my arm around his waist, and above it a text from her.
