Chapter 6: Delaney Wants Him Back

Delaney came through the front door as if the house belonged to her.

She wore a cream dress and a pair of oversized sunglasses, and she was crying on purpose.

My mother walked in behind her with a tissue ready, and my father carried a bouquet of white roses.

Beatrice stood at the bottom of the staircase.

The housekeeper, the doctor, the day nurse and the security man were all still in the hall, because nobody had told them to leave.

"Mrs. Wicklow," Delaney sobbed. "I made a terrible mistake."

She took off the sunglasses and let two perfect tears run down.

"I panicked. I was so frightened for Damian that I said horrible things, and I've hardly slept since. I'm still his fiancée in my heart. I'm here to take my place."

Damian's thoughts came down the stairs and hit me hard.

She's lying. Look at her eyes. There's nothing in them.

"Your place," Beatrice said.

"This marriage was a rushed, desperate mistake," Delaney said. "My sister took advantage of a grieving mother. Annul it, and I'll nurse him myself."

"You threw a ring in her face," Beatrice said. "Three hundred people saw it. Half of them filmed it."

"I was in shock."

"You said 'marry the vegetable.'"

"A joke," my father said, stepping up. "Girls say things. Clara knows that."

My mother turned to me with her tissue pressed to her chest.

"Clara. Your sister is hurting. Tell this lady you'll step aside."

I looked at the three of them in the Wicklows' great hall.

My mother had not called me once in five days.

"No," I said.

Delaney's smile froze.
