Chapter 16: Nobody Left to Lie To

Cory's POV

I caught her at the lobby doors.

I grabbed her sleeve, and she looked at my hand until I let go.

"Beth. I'll fix it."

"You can't."

"I'll resign. Monday morning. I'll walk into the office and put my badge on the desk."

"That's the job you're about to lose anyway."

"Then the house. The cars. My half of everything. I'll sign it over tonight."

"Rhonda already has most of it."

"Then tell me what you want!"

My voice echoed off the marble.

Beth stood there in the green dress, with her coat over her arm.

She did not look angry.

That was what frightened me.

"I want four years of shots back," she said. "I want the mornings I spent sure there was something wrong with my body. Can you give me those?"

"No."

"Then there's nothing to offer."

"I loved you the whole time."

"I believe you," she said.

I had expected her to scream.

I had not expected her to believe me, and I had no answer for it.

"It's the worst part," she said. "You loved me, and you watched me cry in the car."

Her sister came out of the ballroom with Beth's purse and stopped a few feet away.

"Ready?" the sister asked.

"Yes."

Beth put her hand on her stomach and looked at me one more time.

"Do not follow us," she said.

The hotel owner appeared and held the glass door.

He didn't say a word to me.

He just stood there with the door open, and Beth walked through it.

Then the lobby was empty except for the chandelier and me.

I stood still for a while.

I do not know how long.

I could hear the staff folding chairs in the ballroom.
