Chapter 20: Lund Again
The hearing was on a Monday, in a small courtroom with a flag and a broken clock.
I wore the green dress.
Marcy said it had earned a second appearance.
Rhonda sat beside me with one slim folder.
Across the aisle, Cory sat with his lawyer.
He had shaved, and he wore a dark suit that hung loose on him.
His father sat in the last row.
Nobody else had come into the courtroom.
"All rise," the clerk said.
The judge was a tired woman with half-glasses and a firm mouth.
She read the file in silence for two full minutes.
"Mr. Kester," she said, without looking up. "You have signed every term."
"Yes, Your Honor."
"Your counsel tells me you contest nothing."
"Nothing."
"Do you understand that you are giving up the house, the Family Future Fund, and any claim on your wife's earnings?"
"I understand."
"You have also agreed to a finding about the transfers to Ames Events. Do you understand that, too?"
"Yes."
She looked at him over her glasses.
"In thirty years I have not often seen a respondent give up everything without being asked. Do you want to tell me why?"
Cory stood.
"Because it was never mine to keep, Your Honor."
The judge studied him.
"Sit down, Mr. Kester."
He sat.
She turned the page.
"Mrs. Kester. Your counsel asks that you be given your maiden name back."
"Yes, Your Honor. Lund."
"Granted."
My throat tightened, and I didn't know why.
It was only a name.
It was mine.
"The house is yours," the judge went on. "The fund is yours, held for the child. Mr. Kester will be named on the birth record as the father. He has no claim to custody beyond what this court grants after the birth, on a petition and after review. Is that acceptable to both of you?"
