Chapter 22: Her Own Rule

Beth's POV

I found Cory's letter in the mailbox the next morning, with the ink run at one corner.

I read it standing in the lobby.

It asked for nothing.

I folded it, put it in my bag and did not cry.

That surprised me more than anything.

I walked to Rhonda's office and gave her a copy for the file.

Then I took a cab across the lake to Willow Creek.

It was seven in the evening, and the sky over the water had gone orange.

I was sixteen weeks along, and I was starting to show.

Nobody at the front desk stopped me.

I walked through the lobby and down the hall to the conservatory.

The glass doors were open.

Garson was standing among the potted lemon trees with a clipboard.

He looked up.

He put the clipboard on a chair.

"Beth."

"I need a paper," I said.

"Which one?"

"The dinner reservation."

He didn't smile yet.

"For when?"

"Tonight."

"You said after the baby."

"I did."

"You made rules. I keep them."

"I know you do." I walked toward him between the lemon trees. "I made them for a woman who thought she was only half of a marriage. I'm not her anymore."

"Beth."

"Say you don't want me, and I'll turn around."

He took a breath.

"I've wanted you since you walked in with a folder and a trench coat," he said, low. "I've wanted you at every table in that ballroom. I stood at the back of the room and thought about nothing but your hands."

My face went hot.
