Chapter 7: Waiting Room Wife

The lab was in a medical building by the hospital, with gray chairs and a fish tank.

Marcy came with me and read every poster on the wall.

Cory's lawyer had picked the time, and Rhonda had approved it.

Nine on Wednesday, a blood draw from me and a cheek swab from him.

Cory's lawyer had paid for the rush, so the result would come that night.

I was early.

At five to nine the glass door opened, and Cory walked in.

Whitney was beside him in a cream dress, with her arm through his.

She carried his coat over her other arm.

She walked up to the front desk first.

"Kester," she said. "We're here for my husband's test."

The receptionist looked from her to Cory. "Which of you is the patient?"

"Mr. Kester."

"And you're his wife?"

"I'm his support," Whitney said.

She said it nicely, and that was worse.

She took the chair next to Cory's, directly across from me.

Marcy looked at her, looked at me, got up, crossed the room and sat in the chair between them.

"Seating chart," Marcy said pleasantly. "Somebody told me you like those."

Whitney's smile did not move.

Cory stared at the fish tank.

He had not looked at me once.

His shirt was fresh, and he had shaved, but gray shadows circled his eyes from lack of sleep.

"Beth," Whitney said, leaning around my sister. "I brought you something."
