Chapter 24: Same Coat, Thursday

Gwendolyn's POV

Cordelia knocked on the truck window with one knuckle.

She was wet to the shoulders, in a gray coat, with her hair in its usual sleek bun.

I rolled the window down.

"Is it still in stock?" she asked.

"No. I'm wearing it."

"I know. I saw you from the corner." She looked at the coat and at the tags. "Your hood was down."

"It's not a good color for a hood."

"It's a terrible color," said Cordelia. "I want one."

Tiernan got out of the truck and held the shop door for both of us.

The woman at the counter knew me by then.

"We had exactly one," she said. "I can order another from the Cherry Creek store."

"How soon?" asked Cordelia.

"Thursday."

I waited for my sister to say the word she had said all my life.

Today. Same day.

"Thursday," said Cordelia. "That's fine."

I stared at her.

"It's supposed to be today," I said. "That's the whole rule."

"It's your rule." She took out her card. "I never agreed to it."

"You let me follow it for nineteen years."

"I let you follow it for twenty," she said. "I kept hoping you'd stop."

The woman at the counter rang her up.

"Two hundred and nineteen dollars," she said. "Is that the same as hers?"

"The same," I said. "Exactly."

"Then she's paying what you paid," the woman said. "Just later."
