Chapter 15: Holy Saturday

Ren's POV

I popped the last pills out of the foil one at a time and dropped them in the kitchen sink.

All three of them watched me do it from the table.

It was Holy Saturday, and their mother's Easter basket sat on the counter with its white cloth, blessed that morning.

I turned on the tap.

The little pale discs circled once and went down the drain.

"I've said not yet for eleven Sundays," I said. "I'm done saying it."

Cas stood up so fast his chair went over.

"Yes," I said. "I'm staying. This isn't thirty days, and it isn't rent, and it isn't a trade."

"I decided on a bus at four in the morning, and I've been sure since the second Sunday."

"Ren," Cas said, and could not finish.

"I want it all of you," I said. "I want a baby. I want it from the three of you, and I'm choosing it. Nobody asked and nobody gets to thank me."

Rudy covered his mouth with both hands.

Joey was already across the kitchen.

He picked me up under the arms and held me against his chest with my feet off the floor.

"Bed," I said into his collar. "Pop's. Now."

I kept my hand in Joey's as we went down the hall, and Cas's palm settled at the small of my back.

Rudy walked behind us, saying "Oh my God, oh my God" in a whisper.

In Stan's room the lamp was on, and the sticky note was still on its base.

I turned in the middle of the floor and pulled my sweater over my head.

"Here's how it goes," I said. "Everyone is bare. All of you, nothing between us. I decide the order."

"Anything," Rudy said hoarsely.

"Joey first."

Joey looked at his brothers, and at me, and the color came up in his face.

"You always go first," Cas said gently. "You never get to. Go."
