Chapter 20: Ninety Degrees
Ren's POV
It was ninety-one degrees on the first Saturday of September, and the only cool place in the building was the basement.
Cas had spread a camp mattress on the concrete beside the dead boiler.
Stan's army blanket lay over it, and a white cooler stood at the foot.
I lay on my back on the blanket in nothing but my skin.
I was twenty-two weeks along, and the curve of my stomach rose round and tight under the bare bulb.
Three men stood around me with their shirts off, sweating.
"I'm in charge," I said. "Nobody argues."
"Yes, ma'am," Rudy said.
"Rudy, ice."
He flipped the cooler lid and came up with a cube in his fingers, and kneeled by my shoulder.
He drew it slowly across my collarbone.
I gasped, and my nipples drew tight, and the cold ran in a bright thin line down into the hollow of my throat.
"Oh, God," I said. "Again."
He trailed it around my breast in a slow spiral and stopped just short of the nipple.
"Don't tease me," I said.
"I'm not teasing. I'm being thorough."
He touched the ice to the nipple, and I arched.
Joey knelt on my other side.
"Warm it," I said to him.
Joey bent his head and took the iced nipple into his mouth.
The heat of him after the cold went through me in a sheet.
I moaned and put my hand on the back of his head.
"Cas," I said.
He stood at my feet with his arms crossed, still in his work trousers, watching.
He wore the face he wore at a bad pipe, patient and grim.
"Take your clothes off," I said.
"Yes."
"And wait," I said.
"For what?"
"Until I tell you."
He unbuckled his belt, and his jaw flexed, and he did what I said.
Rudy ran the cube down the center of my body, between my breasts, and over the high round of my belly.
