Chapter 17: The Fifth Seventh
The ancestral hall of Gu Garden had stood for two hundred years.
It had never held a worse hour than the one Gu Hanzhou was about to give it.
Five elders sat on a long bench in front of the Gu ancestors' tablets, with their sticks across their knees.
Behind them sat the clan, sixty strong, and at the side, small and upright, sat his grandmother.
The Second Uncle stood at the lectern as petitioner, grave and sorrowful in his grey suit.
At the very back of the hall, by the door, stood Shen Ke.
The petition forbade the house mourner to take part, and Hanzhou had not looked at him since he came in.
"Gu Hanzhou, the eldest son, will speak to his father," said the oldest elder. "He will speak until the tears come. The clan will bear witness."
"Yes, honored great-uncle."
Hanzhou knelt on the cold stone in front of the new tablet.
He had prepared for this, and he knew exactly what he had to do.
He breathed low, from under the breastbone.
