Chapter 23: The Red Envelope
The clock on the ballroom wall struck midnight, and Hanzhou took Shen Ke's hand in front of the last two porters.
"It is after the forty-ninth," he said, in his level voice. "I told sixty people what I would do."
"You told them a good deal more than a kiss."
"I am a man who keeps his word."
They did not speak in the car.
The ginkgo in the courtyard of Gu Garden had dropped nearly all its leaves, and they lay gold on the black stones.
The east wing was dark.
Hanzhou's own room was at the end of it, and he had not slept there since the night his father died.
It was bare, and tidy, with a desk, a narrow window, and one framed photograph turned face down on the shelf.
Shen Ke looked at it, and did not turn it over.
"Later," said Hanzhou.
"Later."
He shut the door.
Then, with great deliberation, he took Shen Ke's face in his hands.
He kissed him for a long time, until Shen Ke's knees began to fail.
"Every time so far, someone else set the pace," said Hanzhou against his mouth. "You, or the hour, or my grief. Tonight I would like to set it."
