Chapter 11: Forty Wolves
"Down!" I said. "Everybody down, now, behind the boulders!"
Nobody argued.
Dacre grabbed the hunter by the collar and pulled her flat, Halvard went into the pine needles on his stomach.
I dropped behind the shelf of rock where I had once lain with a rifle.
The first volley came a breath later.
It was ragged and high, forty rifles opening at six hundred yards.
The rounds cracked over the hill and chewed the pines to splinters.
I counted.
"Ridge line, three clusters," I said. "Left, center, right. They're shooting at the nest because they know it. Marshal's men know exactly where I lay."
"They are not very good," Dacre said into the dirt.
"They don't have to be. Six hundred yards, forty rifles, we have nowhere to go."
"We have the river."
"We have dead ground," I said.
I knew this hill.
I had memorized it before I fired the shot that ruined my life, and I had never forgotten a fold of it.
Thirty yards downslope a gully cut across the hillside, deep enough that a man standing in it was invisible from the ridge.
It ran down to the culvert at the foot of the hill and out under the old valley road.
"On three," I said, "we go for the gully, one at a time, hunter first. Halvard, you're after her. Dacre, you're last."
"I am not last."
"You're the biggest. You draw the most fire. Do you want to argue about it?"
"Not today," said Dacre.
They went.
I pulled my rifle out of its case and fired three careful shots at the left cluster.
The left cluster kept its head down.
Then I ran.
I made the gully on my belly with rounds kicking up dirt behind my heels.
Dacre landed on top of me a moment later, and neither of us said a word about it.
We lay in the trough, breathing.
"Now what?" he said.
"Now I wait for Mercy."
"Mercy doesn't know we're here," he said.
"She will in about four minutes."
I keyed the radio on my belt.
"Dunlap's Last Stop," I said. "Sarge here. Valley's hot. East hill. Forty Eckert Guard on the far ridge, coming across the dam."
The radio hissed.
"Sarge." It was Mercy's voice, clipped and cheerful. "We're at the east gate. Eight of us in two trucks. Your pretty Alpha chewed his way out of the cold room an hour ago and the boys came after him. Where do you want us?"
