Chapter 13: Stonewater

Stonewater is an old hall of grey stone on the edge of a lake.

Four hundred years of boots had worn the floor smooth.

The Court of Packs sat in a horseshoe under the high windows.

Eleven pack Alphas on the right, in their pack colors.

On the left, a bench of Lycan elders in black, grey-haired men and women who looked at me and did not look away.

At the center, a small old woman in a plain brown dress held a wooden staff across her knees.

She was the Speaker of the Court, and she had judged this range for thirty years.

I walked in on my own feet.

Dacre walked at my left shoulder, a pace behind, in his black coat.

Mercy and her vets filled the back benches, and every one of them had put on a clean shirt.

Ansgar Eckert stood alone at the Eckert table in the middle of the floor, in his grey coat.

He had the ease of a man who had won every room he had ever walked into.

He gave me a look of sorrowful affection.

He spoke for forty minutes, warm and grave and reasonable.
