Chapter 18: The Cairn

Four hundred Lycans stood on the gravel terrace where the table had been.

They wore black, every one of them, and they held lit torches in the dusk.

At the center rose a cairn of grey river stones, higher than my head, with a flat gap left at the top.

The last stone lay waiting in the gravel, and nobody spoke.

I had left Mercy at the gate with the truck running.

I walked in alone, with the rifle case on my back and the Warden blade at my belt.

The crowd opened a path for me, which I had not expected.

Then the crowd closed in on both sides, and I understood that it was not mercy.

It was a gauntlet.

Nobody touched me.

They only looked.

A woman with a baby on her shoulder turned her head and spat on the gravel at my boot.

A boy no older than fifteen said, very clearly, "That's her," and a man's hand fell on his arm.

My knees were steady.

My hands were not, so I put them in my pockets.

Halvard was among the stone-carriers at the base of the cairn, stripped to the waist, dust to his elbows.

He was hauling a slab on his shoulder.

He didn't look up.

Dacre stood at the north side of the cairn in his black coat.

His face was wiped blank.

He watched me come the whole length of the terrace and did not move or call out or give a sign.
