Chapter 6: One Bed

The bed was big enough for two people who didn't want to meet in the middle.

Magnus set a rolled-up quilt down the center like a fence.

"Greta will check the sheets," I said. "Not the quilt."

"Then I'll move it before she gets here."

"You think she's coming at dawn?"

"I think she's been planning since the soup course."

I lay on my side with my back to him and my wedding band pressed against my cheek.

The lake slapped the pilings.

Moby sighed at the foot of the bed and took the last of the blanket.

I was cold.

I am always cold, and Trevor used to complain about my feet.

I tucked them up and held very still, and somewhere around two in the morning, I slept.

I woke with a heavy warmth along my spine.

His arm was over my waist, and his hand lay flat against my stomach.

The quilt had been shoved to the floor.

His breath moved in my hair, slow and even, and behind me, pressed firm against the small of my back, was proof that his body had its own opinion about the arrangement.

I did not move.

I told myself it was sleep.

I told myself men woke up that way for no reason at all.

My heart was going so hard I thought it would wake him.

His thumb shifted, once, a small slow drag across my ribs.

I should have pulled away.

I stayed exactly where I was for a long moment.

Then his hand went still, and his whole body went stiff.

He rolled off the bed so fast the frame creaked.

"Sorry," he said, in a rough voice. He stood with his back to me, hands raised a little. "I didn't, that wasn't."
