Camille laughed.
A light, pretty laugh for the tables around her.
"Natalie, you know I can't drink. Not with my kidneys."
"You can," I said into the microphone. "A glass of champagne won't hurt a dialysis patient."
I tipped the flute toward the light.
"But this might. There's something in the bottom that hasn't dissolved yet."
The room murmured.
Nathaniel reached for my arm.
"Natalie, give me the mic."
I stepped away from him.
Ethan was already at the foot of the stage.
He took the glass from my hand and poured it into a sterile tube, right there under the spotlight.
He capped it and held it up so the cameras could see.
"Toxicology at St. Brigid's," he said. "Tonight."
Camille's smile was starting to crack at the corners.
"This is insane. Nathaniel, she's sick. She's been sick for weeks."
"I'm a surgeon," I told the room. "Some of you knew that once."
