Chapter 17: Sign It, Natalie

The morning Camille Hollister walked out of prison, my own blood work came back failing.

I read it on my phone in the locker room at 6:40, half in my scrubs.

Staff physical. Routine. Every surgeon gets one.

Creatinine: 4.1.

I read the number three times.

Then I sat down on the bench under my own name.

DR. NATALIE LANE.

Four-point-one is not a lab error.

Four-point-one is a pair of kidneys that have quietly stopped doing their job.

I found an empty exam room on the third floor and locked the door.

I pulled up my top, squeezed cold gel onto my own back, and ran the ultrasound probe over my left side.

The screen filled with black circles.

Dozens of them, crowded together like soap bubbles in a sink.

I moved the probe to the right side.

Same.

Polycystic kidney disease.

You're born with it. It waits.

My mother died at thirty-nine of what everyone called a stroke.

Nobody ever looked at her kidneys.

I wiped the gel off with a paper towel and sat on the edge of the table.

So that was why.

I'd always blamed the surgery.

The surgery hadn't done it. The cysts had been there all along.

Pierce never ran a real test on me. He only needed one kidney out of me, not a good one.

At 7:30 I scrubbed in for a valve replacement on a retired bus driver.

My hands were perfect.

I didn't tell the scrub nurse.

I didn't tell Ethan, who stuck his head into the OR at nine to steal a look at my sutures and leave again.

I would tell him tonight, at home, with the door shut.

That was the plan.

At noon the cafeteria went quiet.

Every head turned to the televisions over the salad bar.

LIVE, the banner said. HOLLISTER RELEASED ON PAROLE.

The shot wasn't outside a prison.

It was our courtyard.

Our flagstones. Our bench. The nurses' smoking corner by the ambulance bay.
