Chapter 19: Comfort Care
Her father had already uncapped the pen.
The girl in the bed looked fifteen.
Her hair was stuck to her forehead with fever sweat. Old needle scars ran up the inside of both arms.
The monitor said her heart was galloping.
Her father stood at the foot of her bed in a camel overcoat that cost more than my car would have.
He held a clipboard against his chest.
Her mother stood at the window with her back to all of it.
The chief of cardiac surgery was leaning on the doorframe with his arms folded.
"Don't sign that," I said.
The father looked up.
"Who are you?"
"Dr. Lane is off the operating schedule as of this morning," the chief said. "She's not on this case."
"Then why is she in my daughter's room?"
"Because nobody else is," I said.
I picked up the chart from the end of the bed.
Leave it, and the wall would blow out by morning.
Open it, and it was eight hours of the hardest surgery we do.
"You declined her," I said to the chief.
"She's an IV drug user with a destroyed valve. We put a new one in, she goes home, she uses, and she's back with that one infected too."
"That's not a medical reason. That's a moral one."
