Chapter 14: Lavender

Torin shut the study door and turned the iron key in the lock.

He leaned his back against the wood.

"Last night you gave me a place, a day and an hour," he said. "I rode out on it and I didn't ask how you knew."

"I know."

"I'm asking now. And I'm going to tell you something after you answer, and not before."

I looked at the desk.

The middle drawer stood open an inch, and there was nothing in it but a folded cloth.

I had told myself for weeks that when I told him, I would pick the words.

I found I didn't want to.

"I've lived this year before," I said. "I died in it, in the long grass at the Dunmere border, with a grey wolf's head on the hilt in my ribs."

He did not move.

I made myself look at him.

"I woke at the feast with silver in my mouth. I asked you to marry me because I meant to kill you."

The fire popped in the grate.

Torin's face did a strange thing.

It did not harden and it did not break.

It went very quiet, as if a question he had carried a long way had finally been put down.

"The buckle," he said.

"The buckle."

"And my throat, at the wedding."

"Yes."

"Four full minutes." He rubbed his thumb over the scar in his eyebrow. "I thought you were measuring me for a coffin. I wasn't wrong. I only had the wrong reason."

"You asked me to do it to your face."

"I did."

"I've decided against it," I said, and my voice shook on the last word.

He laughed once, without any breath behind it.

Then he crossed the room and took something out of his coat and laid it on the desk between us.
