Chapter 21: Statement
The sentencing was in the big courtroom on the third floor, with wood paneling and a high ceiling and every seat taken.
Bradley's mother sat behind the defense table in a gray suit.
Beside her sat four members of the Thurlow Coastal board, the ones who were left.
I sat in the front row on the other side, between Nan and Eli.
Bradley came in through the side door in a dark suit with no tie.
He'd lost more weight. The ankle monitor showed under his trouser cuff.
The judge was a man with a gray crew cut who didn't waste words.
"Mr. Thurlow, you've pleaded guilty. You've asked to address the victim before sentence. Go ahead."
Bradley stood up.
He had a single sheet of paper. His hands shook so much it rattled.
He put it down on the table and didn't read from it.
"Abby," he said.
The courtroom went still.
"I wrote this ten times. Every version was about me. How I felt. What she told me. What I didn't know."
He looked at the paper.
