Chapter 9: Miracle in Harlan Springs

Five days later, the hospital discharged me in front of a television camera.

I had not asked for the camera.

Imogen had.

She had called the local news herself, and she stood on the front steps of Harlan County Hospital in a cream suit with the mayor on one side of her and a banner on the other.

The banner said WELCOME HOME CORA, in glitter.

"Miracle in Harlan Springs," the anchor said into her microphone, as a nurse wheeled me through the sliding doors.

My side still burned when I breathed.

My left leg was wrapped to the hip.

Keegan pushed the chair himself, with both hands on the grips and a smile for the lens.

Linus walked beside him, holding a bunch of balloons.

He didn't look at me.

Imogen came down the steps with her arms open and a bouquet of white lilies.

"Oh, my darling," she said, loud enough for the microphones. "You're home."

Then she bent and kissed my cheek, and spoke softly into my ear. "Smile."

The cameras flashed.

I smiled, because I had done nothing but smile at the wrong things my whole life.

"Cora," the anchor said, "this is such an incredible story. What's it like to come back from the dead?"

Keegan leaned toward the microphone. "She's tired. She's just glad to be going home to her family."
