Chapter 24: Dispatch
Hollis found me in the dark by the sound of my voice.
He came across the dispatch floor with a lantern, and set it on the console, and stood there while I finished the address I was reading.
"Shelter Five," I said into the key. "Two hundred beds, thirty open. North door. Tell them Greta sent you."
I let go of the key.
He crouched beside the chair.
His face was gray with road dust, and the burn had crept up his jaw.
"Six and seven are open," he said. "I came as fast as I could."
"I heard you on the radio all night."
"You were heard on every radio in the county."
"I know."
"I stood on the roof of the truck at Seven," he said, "with a hand radio and eighty people around me, and every one of them stopped talking when you came on."
He put his forehead against my knee.
I laid my hand on his hair.
Down in the lobby, the crowd had settled.
I could hear the men's voices, low, and the woman with the baby saying thank you to someone for a blanket.
Nobody was shouting.
"Lorraine?" he asked.
"The older deputy brought her up in his cruiser and locked her in the records room."
"With the PAID list?"
"Pinned to her. He says he'll drive her to the county jail when the roads clear, and I told him there's no hurry."
"No."
"Emmett wants to charge her rent."
He laughed, once, against my knee.
The generator never came back.
We ran the rest of the night on the battery bank in the old radio closet, which the young dispatcher found with a flashlight and a lot of swearing.
