Chapter 4: The Flatbed
I crossed the hall and knocked on Hollis's door hard enough to hurt my knuckles.
He opened it in a gray T-shirt, with a dish towel over one shoulder.
His apartment smelled like onions and solder.
"Lorraine says you asked her for the Shelter Four roster last week," I said.
"I did."
"Why?"
"The co-op's line feeds the shelter's backup generator," he said. "The work order had a head count on it. I wanted to know how many people we were keeping the lights on for."
It was a good answer.
It was also too smooth, and it arrived before I finished asking.
"You called me Dispatch yesterday," I said. "Before I'd told you my job."
"You wear the lanyard."
"I wasn't wearing it."
"You wear it in the elevator."
"You said it at my door, before I'd even left the apartment!"
My voice cracked on the last word, and the light in his kitchen jumped.
The bulb over the stove flared white and burst.
Heat shot up my right arm, and the blue came out of my hand all at once.
It ran up my wrist in bright lines and bit into the skin.
I gasped and grabbed for it with my other hand.
Hollis was faster.
He caught my wrist in his bare hand and held it.
The light ran into his palm.
I waited for him to jerk back, for the smell of burning skin, for him to yell.
He did not move, and the light went into him and kept going until it was gone.
The burn on my wrist faded, and my arm went cool.
His fingers were warm and rough, and they circled my pulse.
