Chapter 17: Sentence
Moon Hall was full to the doors by sundown.
I walked in with Ezra on my left and Clover on my right, and the room parted for us without a word.
Nobody whispered.
That was how I knew what the day had cost them.
Celia stood on the dais in silver cuffs.
They had given her a clean white dress, and someone had braided her hair.
She looked like the girl on the school poster.
She looked at the hall and gave it the small, brave smile that had worked on every adult in this pack since she was six.
"I know what you've heard," she said. Her voice shook just enough. "I want to say that I was sick. I loved him so much I could not think. I made one terrible mistake, and I am so ashamed."
Murmurs.
A few wolves in the second row shifted.
I felt Ezra's hand tighten on the back of my chair.
"You'd call it a mistake," the Seer said from her stool. "Two years of mornings."
"I was a child in my heart."
"You are twenty."
"Please," Celia said, and a tear ran down her cheek, perfect and slow. "I have lost my father's name. I have lost my sister. Is that not enough?"
"No," said a voice from the door.
Every head turned.
Jasper was coming up the aisle between two Black Fork wolves, on his own two feet, with an elder's arm under his.
He was gray and thin, and every step cost him.
His mother followed him with both hands clamped over her mouth.
He stopped at the foot of the dais.
He did not look at Celia.
He looked at the pack.
"Every morning," Jasper said, "she put my silver flask in my hand at the car door. She called it chamomile. She said it would settle my nerves."
The hall was silent.
"My wolf went quiet two years ago. I never asked why. I thought I was growing up."
