Chapter 16: The Cellar
Upstairs, Ansel laughed.
"He's useful," he said. "For now."
"For now," Coral repeated. "Promise me."
"Fine. I promise. After the boy swears."
Their footsteps went away across the hall.
A door shut somewhere above.
The cellar was very quiet.
Behind me in the tunnel, Rhoda put her hand on my back.
I felt the others go still, one after another, down the dark line of the rails.
The flashlight beam was pointed at the floor now.
The Beta was staring at it.

The beam snapped up and hit me full in the face.

He stopped two feet from the wall and shone the light through the hole.
It found my face, gray with rock dust. My hacked hair. My wrapped hands.
"You," he said. "How the hell..."
"My great-great-grandfather built this house on top of a mine," I said. "Nobody reads anymore."
