Chapter 20: Alpha

Nobody answered her.

Every eye in the hall slid to Tobin.

He was the one in the suit. He was the one they'd brought to swear.

Tobin looked at me.

Then he shook his head, very slightly.

"Not me," he said, out loud. "It was never supposed to be me."

I got to my feet.

Beck's flannel came down to the middle of my thighs, and I was barefoot and covered in rock dust.

My hair looked like a dog had chewed it.

I buttoned the shirt one button at a time while the whole room watched.

Then I walked to the middle of the floor and stood in front of the Council Mother.

"I claim it," I said.

The crowd went dead still.

"For whom?" the Council Mother said. It was the old question. The one my father had asked when he married me off. "Whom do you swear the Dacey seat to, child?"

"Nobody," I said. "I'm not swearing it to anybody. I'm taking it."

A murmur ran through the hall.

"The seat is Dacey blood," I said. "I'm Dacey blood. My father held it, and his father before him. I'm not handing it to a man to sit in for me, ever again."

I looked out over all of them.

The Alphas of eight packs sat there, and the elders on their bench.
