Chapter 10: The Couch

It was past midnight before the police finished with us.

Two men were in custody, and the silver-haired man in the sedan had vanished into a city of eight million people.

Conal stood in my hallway with his jacket over his arm and sand still on his boots.

"I'm sleeping on your couch," he said.

"No."

"Leandra."

"There's a lock on the door and an officer on the street."

"Dane has had a driver on his payroll for eleven years, and that driver tried to put your daughter in a car." His voice did not rise. "I'm not leaving."

"The terms say Saturdays, one hour."

"Then I'm breaking the terms," he said. "Hate me for it tomorrow."

I looked at him for a long moment.

Both girls were asleep in the next room, in the same bed, with the horses between them.

I was so tired my hands were shaking.

"The couch is short," I said.

"I've slept in worse."

"There's a blanket in the closet."

I went into the bedroom and did not sleep.

At two in the morning, I heard the soft slap of bare feet in the hall.

I came out with my cane and found Maisie on the living room floor in her nightgown, looking at the couch.

Conal lay on it with his boots off and his feet hanging over the arm.

He was awake.

"Is he staying?" Maisie whispered.

"For tonight."

"Can I sleep on him?"

"No," I said.

"Yes," Conal said, at the same time.

Maisie climbed up onto his chest without waiting for the verdict.

She tucked her head under his chin and was asleep inside a minute.
