Chapter 27: Yours to Decide
On Wednesday afternoon, a man in a charcoal suit walked into the atelier and asked for Mrs. Draper.
Eleven seamstresses looked up from their machines.
Odette looked up from the cutting table with her tape measure around her neck.
"There's no Mrs. Draper here," she said.
"I'm Leandra Linwood," I said, and I put down my shears. "What do you want?"
He gave me a card that said he was counsel for the Dane family.
He did not offer a hand, and I did not offer a chair.
"My client has asked me to extend a courtesy," he said.
"Your client is in the county jail."
"That's why I'm here. He would like to settle everything between your families before the arraignment."
He opened a leather folder on the cutting table and slid a single page across it.
There was a number at the bottom, and I read it twice.
It had six zeros.
"Two million dollars," he said, "paid to you personally, for the pain and the loss of the last seven years."
"For what?"
"In exchange, you sign a short statement. The recording you played at the gala was edited. You were mistaken about what was said. You will not testify."
The room had gone entirely quiet.
I heard the front door open behind me, and a step on the boards, and I knew whose it was without turning around.
Conal had come up from the lobby with a paper sack of sandwiches.
He stopped at the edge of the cutting floor and set the sack down on a chair.
He looked at the lawyer's folder and then at me.
