Chapter 30: Odette's List
On Sunday, Conal cooked dinner in my kitchen for five people, and Odette brought an index card.
"What is that?" Conal asked, from the stove.
"My list," Odette said. She sat down at the head of the table and uncapped a red pen. "I want to ask you some questions, and you will answer them in front of the children."
"Is that necessary?" I asked.
"It's a family dinner. They're family."
Maisie put down her fork and sat up straight.
Bea looked at the index card with real interest.
Conal wiped his hands on a dish towel, turned off the burner and sat down across from Odette.
"Go ahead," he said.
"Question one. Can you braid hair?"
"No."
"Will you learn?"
"Bea has been teaching me on a rope," Conal said. "I'm up to three strands."
"He's bad," said Bea, kindly.
"Question two. A woman you love tells you she's going to walk into a burning building."
"I hold the door."
Odette stopped with her pen in the air.
"You hold the door."
"I stand next to it and I hold it open," he said. "And then I go in after her, because she'll have told me where the water is."
"That's a better answer than I wrote down."
"I've had time to think about it."
Odette made a tick on the card.
"Question three. Priscilla's father wants you to sign something. What do you do?"
"I read it, I take it to Leandra, and I do what she says."
"Even if you disagree?"
"I tell her I disagree, and then I do what she says." He looked at me, and the corner of his mouth lifted. "She's right more often than I am. It's very annoying."
