Chapter 12: The Cord

He took me to the Oath Hall at one in the morning, with the key to the iron door in his fist.

"If you can break the Stone," he said, "there's no Renewal."

"And if I can't?"

"Then we think of something else."

He locked the door behind us.

The torches had burned down to coals in their brackets.

The hall was black and cold and smelled of old stone, and in the middle stood the pillar with its dark seam.

I walked up to it.

He took up his place by the door, as a guard, with his back to me.

I put my bare right hand on the Stone.

The hum came up my arm as it always did.

It was slow and enormous, and this time it did not stop at my wrist.

It came up through my shoulder and my skull and filled my whole head, and the room opened around me.

I saw the cords.

They were everywhere.

Thin silver threads ran into the pillar from every wall.

They came through the stone from the barracks, from the sentry towers, from the wall and the stables, hundreds of them, each one a wolf's life tied down.

I could feel the weight on each thread.

From the top of the Stone, a single fat rope of light ran away up through the roof, east toward Kingshold.

It ended in a hand.

I could not see the hand, but I knew whose it was.

I saw the Oath for what it was, a net, and I was standing in the middle of it.

I made a noise, and the commander turned around.
