Chapter 15: Orders, Commander

We marched all night and all the next day, and by dusk the Ninth had stopped talking.

Fifty-eight wolves walked the river road in their shirts, with their feet bleeding, and nobody complained.

Garreth walked at the head of the line.

I walked beside him, because he had stopped me twice from falling.

Around the last bend, the road dipped to an old stone mill on a millrace.

The wheel was broken and the windows were black.

Garreth put out his arm.

"Stop," he said quietly.

The line stopped.

He tilted his head, listening, then looked at me.

"Twenty," he said. "Maybe more. Upper floor of the mill, the far slope, and the ditch on our right."

"Collars?"

"They rode ahead of us. They've been waiting."

Sergeant Tolley slid up on my other side.

She looked at the ground, at the hill, at the dark water running under the plank bridge.

Then she looked at me.

"Corporal," she said. "Orders?"

I stared at her.

"You don't ask me. Ask the Commander."

"He's not the Commander of anything any more." She said it plainly. "He told us so. It's your road, Morcant. You see it better than he does."

Garreth looked at me.

There was no resentment in him anywhere.
