Chapter 14: Every Camera

The candle on the screen burned down to the frosting.

The girl on the stool didn't lift her head.

Curtis watched my face instead of the video.

That was the part that made my skin crawl.

"Delete it," I said.

"Why? It's sweet." He tucked the phone back in his pocket. "Don't worry. I keep the originals somewhere safe."

"Why do you have that?"

"I check systems at night." He winked. "Insomnia."

Behind us, the balcony door banged open.

Abel stood there with his glasses fogged from the cold and a club soda still in his hand.

"Sorry," he said. "It's been two hours. I made a promise to a dog."

Curtis laughed and raised his bourbon at him.

"The boyfriend! Come have a drink."

"I don't drink with people who film her," Abel said mildly. "It's a personal rule."

The laugh stayed on Curtis's face.

The rest of his face didn't.

I walked past him without a word, and Abel held the door for me, and neither of us looked back.

In the truck, I played the recording.

Three board seats. Twelve percent. The guy who checks the cameras at night.
