Chapter 21: The Diary
Every head swung back to me.
Curtis walked out onto the empty dance floor with the microphone.
"Go on, kiddo. Tell them." He spread his free hand. "Five years of a black notebook. Every night on his couch, under the living room camera. Page after page about him."
"I'm not saying she slept with him," Curtis said. "I'm saying she wanted to. For years. And everybody here deserves to know what's living in the bride's house."
Esteban was still standing over his fallen chair.
Jocelyn was white under the pink wig.
Abel stood up at our table.
I shook my head at him, just once.
He sat back down, slowly, with his fists on the tablecloth.
I walked to the DJ booth and held out my hand.
The kid in the vest gave me the second microphone without a word.
"He's right," I said.
"I had a diary."
Nobody moved.
"Every page was about him. I loved him. I was eighteen and he was the only person who ever came back for me. I'm not ashamed of that."
