Chapter 22: The Condo

I could have said no.

"Yes," I said.

Her grip tightened on my hand.

"Why?"

"Because I loved him once," I said. "And I didn't want to be the reason for anything. Not your breakup, not your bad day, not a single fight. I wanted to be gone before I could be."

Jocelyn stared at me.

"You idiot," she said. "You complete, total idiot."

"I know."

"You think I'd trade you for a man? Over a notebook you wrote at eighteen?" She shook my hand like she was trying to wake it up. "You got me into an MRI. You put my ring back on. I'd have fought him for you."

"Joss."

"I'd have won, too. Look at him. He cries at commercials now."

Behind her, Esteban was picking up his chair with his face wet.

He heard that.

He didn't argue.

Jocelyn turned to the DJ booth.

"Play something!" she called. "Something terrible! The bride wants to dance!"

The kid played a song from a wedding in every movie I'd ever seen.

Jocelyn dragged me onto the floor, and I dragged Abel, and Abel dragged his safety pins.
